Our Founder’s Story
In 2006, a young Burmese woman named Lu Lu Nhkum narrowly escaped the unrest in her country. Because of her advocacy for her people, the military government perceived her as a threat. LuLu was forced to flee her home country into Malaysia, where she started a school for refugee children, while living as a refugee herself.

Through a refugee resettlement program, LuLu was placed in the United States in 2009. Soon after she arrived in Nashville, TN, she began working for World Relief, again advocating for other refugees like herself.
LuLu’s desire to help others was rooted in her faith in Jesus. As a young woman she encountered Jesus personally through a class that taught English using the Bible. Her passion to help her people remained even as she began a new life in the United States.
At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, the dictatorship in Myanmar closed down all the schools, hurling the youth into further isolation. Lulu was burdened for the next generation and prayed for a way to help.
She had experienced firsthand the plight of the Burmese people within her own family, having lost one of her brothers to drug addiction and the other to human trafficking. These personal losses are what propelled LuLu to later become the founder of Light of the World Club. The things that gave her hope as a young adult were learning English and hearing the Word of God, so she set out to share those gifts with the kids back home.
She began to conduct a weekly class over Zoom with a handful of students. The response was overwhelming as more and more Burmese parents showed interest in these classes. LuLu prayed for others to join her in serving these families. God gradually provided more teachers, donors, and eventually a board of directors to help her launch Light of the World Club as a non-profit in the fall of 2023.
What We Do

Our Burmese brothers and sisters have been suffering the effects of Civil War for nearly a century. The Light of the World Club exists to empower families in Myanmar through education and spiritual discipleship. We offer weekly classes over Zoom, providing English instruction as well as Biblical education. Light of the World Club also offers individual tutoring, runs multiple classes in Myanmar through paid local teachers, and provides scholarships for advanced education to promising students from our program.
Learning English provides a significant advantage to the children because it allows broader access to educational resources and other cultures and economies outside of Burma. It exposes them to ideas and views that show them alternatives to the oppression and violence that they have always known. Through studying the Bible as they learn English, our students can grow in their understanding of what it means to follow Jesus, which will enable them to spread the kingdom of God in their war-torn nation. Our hope is that some of these children will be placed strategically in positions of leadership to move Burma forward into a future of peace.
Among our greatest needs are funding for teacher salaries, scholarships, and school supplies (Bibles, Chromebooks…etc.). We have a waiting list of children who want to be a part of this program and are also in need of more volunteers. Please consider joining us as we join God in bringing hope and purpose to the precious people of Burma.
